AI-Assisted Literature Review¶
AI-assisted literature review uses LLMs and specialized tools to accelerate the process of finding, reading, summarizing, and synthesizing academic literature.
Context & Background¶
Literature review is one of the most time-consuming aspects of academic research. AI tools can assist at every stage:
- Search: AI-powered academic search engines (Semantic Scholar, Elicit, Consensus)
- Summarization: Condensing papers into key findings and methods
- Synthesis: Identifying themes and connections across multiple papers
- Gap identification: Finding what hasn't been studied
- Citation management: Organizing and formatting references
Practical Implications¶
- Verify all citations: AI frequently fabricates paper titles, authors, and findings — verify everything
- Use AI for synthesis, not search alone: The real value is in connecting ideas across papers
- Combine tools: Use Semantic Scholar for search, NotebookLM for deep reading, LLMs for synthesis
- Read key papers yourself: AI summaries are no substitute for deep reading of foundational papers in your area
